How to write a CEO resume, with a template and examples

The short answer

A chief executive officer (CEO) resume shows the organizations you led, the direction you set and what changed under your leadership. Open with a short executive summary naming the kind and scale of organization and the situations you lead best, such as growth, a turnaround or a transformation. Give each role one scope line, then a few achievement bullets with results from your own record. Mirror the job description’s words where they are true. Keep the layout plain; usually, two pages are enough.

What a CEO resume must show

  • The organizations you led and their scale: revenue, employees, sites or markets.
  • The strategy you set and the major choices you made.
  • Results over your tenure, from your own record.
  • Your work with the board, investors, owners or other governing bodies.
  • The leadership team you built and the culture you shaped.
  • Major events you led, such as acquisitions, turnarounds or entry into new markets.

How to write CEO achievement bullets

Use this pattern: the decision or change you led, how you did it, and the result in your own numbers. Name your contribution and the period of the change. Replace every placeholder with evidence from your record; if a figure is unavailable, describe a verifiable change rather than inventing a result.

Strategy and growth

Before: Led company strategy.

After: Set [strategic direction] for [organization], shifted [resources or portfolio] toward [priority], and grew [revenue, customer or market measure] from [your baseline] to [your figure] over [period].

Turnaround and transformation

Before: Turned the business around.

After: Took over [organization] during [situation], led [specific actions] with the [leadership team or board], and returned [profit, cash or performance measure] to [your figure] within [period].

Leadership team and culture

Before: Built a strong team.

After: Rebuilt the [leadership team or function] by [hiring, promoting or reorganizing], introduced [operating practice or value], and improved [engagement, retention or execution measure] by [your figure] over [period].

CEO resume keywords

  • Strategy and direction: vision, strategic planning and portfolio choices.
  • Growth: new markets, products, partnerships and acquisitions.
  • Financial performance: revenue, profitability, cash and capital allocation.
  • Board and governance: board relations and communication with investors and owners.
  • Transformation: turnaround, restructuring and changes to the operating model.
  • Leadership and culture: building the executive team, succession and engagement.
  • Stakeholders: customers, regulators, communities and public communication.
  • Risk: enterprise risk, crisis leadership and resilience.

Every keyword must be backed by a bullet you can defend. Use the job description’s words only where they accurately describe your experience.

Adapting it to the organization

  • A publicly listed company: put shareholder value, governance and investor communication first where your record supports them.
  • A company owned by a private equity firm: put the value creation plan, cash and the time frame you worked to first.
  • A founder-led or growth company: put scaling, funding and building the leadership team first.
  • A nonprofit or public body: put mission, funding, stakeholders and stewardship first, and use the title you actually held, such as executive director.

Common mistakes

  • Writing a career biography instead of a resume with evidence.
  • Giving company results without making your part and your tenure clear.
  • Describing every early role in the same detail as recent ones.
  • Leaving out the board and investor relationships you managed.
  • Using broad words such as visionary without a decision to support them.
  • Making the document longer than the evidence needs.

FAQ

What should a CEO resume include?

Include an executive summary, areas of expertise, and experience that makes the scale of each organization and your decisions clear. Give each role a scope line and achievement bullets supported by your record. Add board and advisory roles, education and any relevant credentials.

How long should a CEO resume be?

Usually, two pages give you room for your scope and most important results. Give recent leadership roles the most space and summarize earlier career in a few lines. Keep further detail for a separate board biography if one is requested.

How do I show results as a CEO without taking credit for the whole company?

Name the decisions you made and the direction you set, then give the organization’s result over your tenure with its measure and period. Credit the leadership team where it fits. Make clear what you changed, so the reader can connect your choices to the result.

Should a CEO resume include a board biography?

Keep the resume and a board biography as separate documents. The resume gives evidence role by role; a board biography is a short narrative written in the third person. Prepare both if the search asks for both.

How do I write a CEO resume when moving up from president or chief operating officer?

Keep your actual titles and show the enterprise-wide responsibilities you already held, such as profit and loss ownership, contact with the board or a full leadership team. Highlight the strategic decisions you shaped. Let that evidence show readiness rather than giving yourself a title you have not held.
